What do our dogs have to achieve to officially join our program?

Being a beautiful dog with a great coat and heritage is only the beginning. Before officially joining the Dessie’s Doodles breeding program, every dog must meet our standards for health, temperament, structure, and behavior.
Each prospective breeding dog must:

  • Complete comprehensive genetic testing for more than 260 conditions via embark
  • Pass all breed-appropriate health testing including OFA evaluations for hips, elbows, patellas, heart, eyes, and dentition
  • Complete PennHIP testing to evaluate hip health
  • Earn their Canine Good Citizen certification
  • Pass evaluations with a 3rd party trainer to become a certified Therapy Dog
  • Demonstrate a stable, confident, people-oriented temperament
  • Show the structure, coat quality, and breed traits we want to preserve
  •  Continue to mature into a healthy, well-rounded adult

Completing health testing does not automatically guarantee a place in our program. We consider the whole dog including temperament, health, structure, pedigree, and how they develop over time. If a dog does not meet every standard, they are lovingly retired from our breeding plans and remain just as valued as a family companion with us or their guardian family.
These requirements help us make thoughtful breeding decisions and produce puppies with the greatest possible potential to become healthy, confident companions, therapy dogs, and service-dog prospects.

A Note On Titling

All of our breeding dogs are required to earn temperament and behavior titles through evaluations conducted by AKC-approved evaluators. These assessments are completed in the appropriate environments and according to the same standards used to evaluate purebred dogs, ensuring our dogs demonstrate the stable temperament, confidence, and sound behavior we expect from our breeding program.

Because Australian Labradoodles, and other doodles, are not an AKC-recognized breed and our breeding dogs are not spayed or neutered, the AKC does not permit them to officially register or hold AKC titles. However, every evaluation is completed by qualified AKC-approved evaluators using the proper testing protocols, giving our families confidence that our dogs have met the same behavioral expectations, even if the titles cannot be officially recorded with the AKC
